MARiS uses ocean biogeochemical and numerical modelling to understand ocean productivity, atmosphere-ocean interactions, ecosystem function and polar climate, and climate change impacts on marine ecosystems.

Areas of Research

  • Role of Antarctic sea ice in the Earth's climate and biogeochemical cycles;
  • Atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions at multiple scales;
  • Predictive models of the polar ocean environment in the Southern Hemisphere to support climate projections, forecasting, and operational activities;
  • Accurate models describing the coupled physical, mechanical, and biogeochemical processes of the ocean and sea ice at sub-meter scale;
  • Deep sea exploration for understanding climatic baselines and long-term changes;
  • Cold environment technology and low-cost innovation for addressing long-term changes in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica.
