Call for Abstracts

We are pleased to invite participants to submit abstracts to the inaugural Marine and Antarctic Research Centre for Innovation and Sustainability (MARiS) Early Career Researchers (ECR) Conference, bringing together a diverse community of researchers to share boundary breaking knowledge and innovation. MARiS is a trans-, inter- and multi-disciplinary research centre that promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing within and around the marine and polar disciplines. 

Date: Friday, 12 September 2025

Time: 08:30 – 17:00

Venue: Snape Building, Upper Campus, University of Cape Town, Rondebosch

The conference is free to register and participate in.

A selected number of ECRs will have the opportunity to present their research as either an oral or poster presentation. We encourage all ECRs to submit an abstract to present at this year’s conference related to marine and polar disciplines in the Southern Hemisphere.

Applications for the conference, including abstract submissions, must be submitted online here and any queries can be directed to the ECR representatives (ecr.maris@uct.ac.za).  Applications will be reviewed, and the selected participants will be notified by email. Oral presenters will have the opportunity to give a presentation (10 minutes, and 5 minutes for questions) of their work during the conference. Prizes will be awarded for best oral and poster presentations at the end of the conference. The keynote speakers chosen for the conference will be announced in due course.

In addition to the presentations and posters, we invite researchers to submit a photograph related to their research that will be electronically exhibited at the conference. A prize will be awarded for the best photograph.
