SPACES Scholarships for Post Graduate Studies in Germany
Background
According to estimations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Africa is one of the continents most vulnerable to climate change and climate variability. In Africa, the changes are already visible in a variety of ecosystems. They occur earlier than anticipated, due to the interaction of natural processes with human interventions (such as deforestation, forest fires or overfishing). This increases the pressure to find and implement suitable solu-tions. Against this background, the programme SPACES (Sciences Partnership for the As-sessment of Complex Earth System Processes) was developed by researchers from the University of Hamburg, the Leibnitz Centre for Tropical Marine Ecology Bremen and the German Research Centre for Geosciences Potsdam, together with partners in South Africa, Namibia and Angola. The project is financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Re-search (BMBF). Corporate research projects will develop science-based recommendations for Earth System Management in the fields of “Ocean and Coast”, “Biosphere” and “Geo-sphere”. This could include, for example, suggestions for the installation of national parks or for defining coast and sea areas that are especially worth of protection. On the same hand, possible outcomes could be recommendations for new rules and laws regarding fishing, land use or the management of water resources and energy.
Aim
The programme „SPACES Scholarships for Post Graduate Studies in Germany“, that is also financed by BMBF funds, aims to acquaint young scientists from South Africa, Namibia and Angola with the SPACES research projects at an early stage. Therefore, the scholarship programme offers the opportunity to excellent post graduates from the above mentioned countries to study in selected M.Sc. courses at German universities, after having completed a four-month German language course.
