18 Jun 2013

WWF-SASSI would like to inform you, as interested and affected parties, of the preliminary results of sustainability assessments for imported species in wild capture fisheries. Please note, these are DRAFT results, the finalisation of which is pending the completion of the full assessment process (see attached for the WWF-SASSI process).

Stakeholders now have 30 days to submit comments on these draft assessments (due date: Friday 12 July), after which the assessments will be externally reviewed. The outcome of the external review will be final and the outcomes of the assessments will be included into WWF-SASSI awareness material after 60 days. Stakeholders wishing to submit comments on the draft assessment outcomes need to contact us at sassi@wwf.org.za, clearly stipulating the specific assessment they would like to submit comments for and their objections to the draft assessment colour (please note that any comments submitted need to be supported by published references such as Scientific Working Group documents or peer-reviewed journal papers).

If you would like to be included in the WWF-SASSI mailing list, which is used for all notifications of developments and progress during the SASSI listing process, please email us on sassi@wwf.org.za.

The SASSI assessment process is also outlined below for your convenience. For further information, visit the SASSI website (www.wwf.org.za/sassi) or email us on the above email address.

Kind regards

WWF-SASSI

WWF-SASSI Assessment Process

International species:

1. Search International database and, if assessment has already been conducted, download assessment and proceed to step (2). If not, proceed to steps (3)-(7).

2. Notify interested and affected parties of preliminary outcome of draft assessment via the WWF-SASSI website, SANCOR network and WWF-SASSI listing mailing list (which includes SASSI Restaurant and Retailer Participants, RFA members, other industry bodies, etc.), specifying that after 30 days the assessment will be sent for confidential external review (allow 30 days for receiving final input and information). Now proceed to step (9).

3. Notify interested and affected parties of international assessment to be undertaken via the WWF-SASSI website, SANCOR network and WWF-SASSI listing mailing list (which includes SASSI Restaurant and Retailer Participants, Responsible Fisheries Alliance (RFA) members, other industry bodies, etc.), and invite relevant documentation (allow 30 days for receiving input).

4. Indicate clearly on the WWF-SASSI website which assessments are under revision. (Suggested text to be used: * Please note, this species is currently under revision in terms of its WWF-SASSI sustainability rating, and more recent information incorporated into the assessment may affect its colour categorisation.)

5. WWF or WWF-appointed consultant to conduct assessment.

6. Submit the key draft assessments to the relevant Working Groups at Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) to ensure locally relevant research and/or management input (small pelagic fishery, large pelagic fishery, demersal fishery, WCRL).

7. Notify interested and affected parties of preliminary outcome of draft assessment or review via the WWF-SASSI website, SANCOR network and WWF-SASSI listing mailing list (which includes SASSI Restaurant and Retailer Participants, RFA members, other industry bodies, etc.), specifying that after 30 days the assessment will be sent for confidential external review (allow 30 days for receiving final input and information).

[Specifically note that those wishing to view the draft assessments must complete an official document of motivation to do so, which can be obtained by contacting WWF-SASSI on sassi@wwf.org.za. Further note that, because the WWF-SASSI assessments are science-based documents, any comments submitted for consideration must be properly substantiated i.e. supported by published references, such as Scientific Working Group documents or peer-reviewed journal papers.]

8. Submission to WWF International database, subject to the WWF International submission terms.

9. Notify interested and affected parties of assessment outcome via the WWF-SASSI website, SANCOR network and WWF-SASSI listing mailing list (which includes SASSI Restaurant and Retailer Participants, RFA members, other industry bodies, etc.), and note that the assessment result will be included into WWF-SASSI materials after at least 60 days.
