Tropical Atlantic Variability conference update

The 2015 Tropical Atlantic Variability Conference was held at the Breakwater Lodge from Monday 24th to Friday 28th August with a diverse group of 90 delegates from 25 countries in attendance.

Climatologists, physical oceanographers, marine biologists and social scientists working on improving our understanding of events detrimental to society, came together. With a single session encompassing all themes, attendees engaged with each other’s work from various disciplinary backgrounds to improve knowledge of the tropical Atlantic.

The regional scenario for continental climate and marine resources in the tropical Atlantic and adjacent Benguela and Canary upwelling needs to be improved. We are a long way from understand the impact of climate variability and climate change on the marine ecosystem but great progress was made specifically for the Senegalese upwelling marine ecosystem.

Students from Africa and Brazil were able to engage with a diverse set of leading international scientists from many different institutional homes.

The cross-cutting nature of the themes is reflected in the organisations involved in bringing so many people together. This was made possible by the joint work of Ma-Re (Marine Research Institute), PREFACE (Enhancing Prediction of Tropical Atlantic Climate and its Impacts), PIRATA (Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Tropical Atlantic) and CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change).
