To apply for the Applied Ocean Sciences (AOS) taught Masters degree at UCT, you have to to complete both applications: 

  • First, you need to apply to UCT via their online application system: UCT application. Note that online applications for UCT open in April/May for the following year. Please refer to the UCT website for details on the UCT application process.

  • International students must also contact the International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) as they will be able to advise on all the necessary documentation required to study in South Africa and any other related queries.

  • Secondly, you need to apply to us at MARIS: MARIS application. 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 31 August 2024*. Successful candidates will be contacted by the end of October 2024. Applications for international students are closing on the 31st of August, but since the date has been advertised incorrectly on the UCT website, we will be accepting applications from SA citizens and permanent residents until the 30th of September 2024.                   
*Please note that students who want to apply for the DSI-NRF Postgraduate Student Funding for the 2025 Academic Year must do so by 31 August 2024 (see more details here).  

ALL postgraduate students applying for master’s or doctoral NRF scholarships must upload a recommendation letter from their supervisor/head of department. Because the AOS Masters thesis and supervision are not finalised until the coursework is almost completed, you will require a letter from the course conveners that certify your application to the master program and the necessary supervision in case of acceptance. Once completed and signed, it must be included as attachment for the application to be considered complete and for funding support. THE ONUS REMAINS ON THE APPLICANT TO ENSURE THIS DOCUMENT IS COMPLETED AND ATTACHED TO THE NRF APPLICATION. Please note, the Designated Authority (UCT NRF Staff) will stamp the letter during their review period.
