Leading experts, including Prof Marcello Vichi from UCT-MARiS, was invited to join COP29 Polar Oceans session through BEPSII to discuss ongoing and future changes in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, their effects on polar ocean ecosystems, and our current understanding and preparedness for these changes. As sea ice remains a unique, fundamental, and fragile habitat, precautionary principles, thorough scientific studies, and strong regulatory frameworks are crucial when considering any human interventions. Finally, policy recommendations will be provided where further research is urgently needed.

In the recording below (from 55min), Prof Marcello Vichi addresses "Perspectives and Recommendations from the Global South" elaborating on the following sub-topics:
1. Unfamiliarity
2. Diversity
3. Urgency
