UCT’s Marine and Antarctic Research for Innovation and Sustainability (UCT-MARiS) continues to champion interdisciplinary approaches to ocean sustainability by bringing together science, social science, arts, and local community knowledge systems. Through collaborative projects such as the AtlantECO Project and the Southern Cape Interdisciplinary Fisheries Research (SCIFR) project focused on marine ecosystems, fisheries, climate change, and coastal livelihoods, the UCT-MARiS team has helped create meaningful platforms for storytelling, dialogue, and awareness campaigns around the lived realities of ocean-dependent communities. By working alongside fishing communities, artists, researchers, and educators, these initiatives celebrate the importance of diverse ocean knowledges and cultures while highlighting the urgent need for inclusive, socially just responses to climate change and ocean sustainability.
