Belmont Forum Proposal successful!

Ma-Re joins forces with a host of institutions from various countries to undertake research on the reducing vulnerability of marine-dependent coastal communities in joint research proposal funded by the Belmont Forum.
The Belmont Forum/IGFA is a high level group of the world’s major and emerging funders of global environmental change research and international science councils. The Forum acts as a central hub for international funding by amalgamating all fragmented international funding available. It is hoped that this Forum will allow for better funder coordination or co-alignment of large, multidisciplinary projects.
Given the current vulnerabilities of coastal communities, and the limited integration of natural and social studies along with the poor implementation of research and policy recommendations to address these concerns, the project’s main focus will be to “characterize, assess and predict the future of coastal-marine food resources to improve community adaptation efforts. The project would focus on providing and sharing knowledge across regional “hotspots”, which have been defined by the project proposers as “fast-warming marine areas and areas experiencing social tensions as a result of change.”
The partner institutions are from 10 countries spread across the globe. For more information on the Belmont Forum proposal please contact us at ma-re@uct.ac.za
